2010 Match ReportsPosted by ABC Blog Sat, August 28, 2010 18:55:36Aberdare V Thomastown CVL
Date 28.08.10 - Venue Away
The afternoon was dry and sunny and the green was looking in good condition for a good game of bowls. Due to holidays and other commitments several key players were missing and all 3 of the regular skips were absent. Aberdare were short by 2 players which also had a bearing on the game but well done for the players who made up the team. This was going to be a tough fixture with all of the absentees and this was a key game if Aberdare are to avoid relegation.
Teams:
R1 – M Davey*, H Davies, D Barnsley, A Meredith
R2 – A Bailey, W Thomas*, T Robertson
R3 – A Pearce, J Butler, G Davies*
R4 – J Davies, P Gittins, V Watts, S Davey*
* Denotes Man of Match
R1 – Honours even after the first couple of ends but Thomastown get a head of steam and move into a 6-1 lead. Aberdare pick up 3 shots in the 7th end to make it more respectable. Oh Lord Aberdare, what happens next is not pretty as Aberdare go to sleep for 10 ends and do not score a shot, meanwhile Thomastown pile on the score and are way out of sight at 26-4. Aberdare finally wake up and get a few shots but to no avail and get a severe thrashing.
Final Score
Aberdare 7 – 29 Thomastown
R2 – Aberdare get away to a slow start but each end is close, but fall behind 7-0 after 4 ends. Eventually Aberdare get on the scorecard and go on to win the next 8 ends to take the lead 13-7. Tea is taken and breaks the Aberdare rhythm but soon get back into it and keep the pressure on Thomastown to run out winners, the only winning rink of the day.
Final Score
Aberdare 15.75 – 11 Thomastown
R3 – Another slow start from Aberdare who lose the first 3 ends and are 3-0 down. Aberdare pull out a 4 shot win in the next but are shut out for the next 5 ends and go further behind at 13-4. Aberdare pull a couple more back but lose heavily especially after deduction of quarter shots.
Final Score
Aberdare 9 – 20 Thomastown
R4 – Honours even after the first couple of ends but Aberdare get the bit between their teeth and pick up several shots to lead 8-1. Back come Thomastown picking up shots by the bucketful and retake the lead 14-11. Thomastown keep the momentum and run out easy winners.
Final Score
Aberdare 13 – 21 Thomastown
Overall score Aberdare 44.75 – 81
ThomastownAberdare 2 points Thomastown 12 Points
A poor result, but expected due to the lack of a regular team, with this result Aberdare are odds on for RELEGATION.
2010 Match ReportsPosted by ABC Blog Tue, August 24, 2010 21:14:50Tuesday 24th August - A break in the weather allowed a couple of more club games to go ahead.
Pairs Competition - Rob Harries & George Rowlands v Ray Keenan & Alwyn Bailey. The agreed format was 15 ends with one shot on the first 2 ends. Rob & George start the better and win the first 2 ends, the next few ends are all close and after 10 ends only single shots have been scored with Rob & George ahead by a couple at 6-4. It is still close and after 12 ends I think it was about 10-6 still with Rob & George. Ray and Alwyn score a double in the next end to make it 10-8 but still down. The next end proves to be the match winner as somehow Ray & Alwyn score a SIX shot win and leap into the lead for the first time in the match. The last end is a bit tense as Alwyn puts 2 woods in the count, and with only Rob and Ray to bowl. Alwyn and Ray win the last end by a shot to run out winners 15-10 an unbeleivable turnaround.
The second club match was Tom Miles v Howard Davies, the master and the apprentice. The handicap was largely in favour of Howard who had to attain 19 shots to Tommys 27!! I was unable to account for the early ends but Tommy was on fire and was about 20-0 up with Howard unable to get anywhere near. Eventually Howard gets on the scoreboard but is it too late? as the score is now
26-1 to Tommy who only needs one shot. Howard to his credit sticks at it and by getting on the scoresheet gives him confidence. Slowly but surely Howard keeps scoring and Tommy cannot get across the finishing line. Howard vows to "fight to the end" and keeps getting the winners as he now gets into double figures at 26-10. Another couple of ends goes Howards Way ( I think that used to be a TV show ) and takes a further 5 shots out of Tommys lead at 26-15. Surely this must be the greatest escape act since Colditz? Can Howard clinch it. Finally Tommy gets his just desserts and takes the one shot he needs and breathes a sigh of relief as he moves into the final. Well done Tommy and Howard for providing great entertainment to the "boys on the bank" spectating.

R2 – A Pearce*, H Davies, J Butler, A Meredith
R3 – R Keenan, G Rowlands, D Barnsley*, LIsaac
R4 – A Bailey*, J Davies, T Robertson, R Harries

R1 – Honours even after the first couple of ends, and after a few more ends it is Mt Ash who take a slender lead at 6-3. Aberdare are keeping the score honest but cannot get back on level terms, after thirteen ends it is 11-10 to Mt Ash. The scores are still tight but Aberdare cannot find that extra gear and lose out on this one.
Final Score
Aberdare 13 – 15 Mt Ash
R2 – Aberdare take the first two trial ends to lead 2-0, a couple of good wins in the next few ends give Aberdare an 8-2 lead. What happened next? A calamitous 6 shot loss from Aberdare and Mt Ash are back level at 8-8. Mt Ash capitalise on the demise of Aberdare and open out a lead of 12-8 after 10 ends. Aberdare regain their composure and bring the scores level after 15 ends to 13-13. Mt Ash take the next end by a shot to retake the lead, but it is déjà vu on the penultimate end Aberdare lose 6 shots for the second time to lose by a big margin.
Final Score
Aberdare 14 – 20 Mt Ash
R3 – Aberdare make a very good start winning six of the first seven ends to lead 8-1. Mt Ash break the run at the next end, but Aberdare get straight back in to increase the lead to 14-2. Mt Ash stage a bit of a rally, but Aberdare are maintaining a big gap and win this one easily.
Final Score
Aberdare 19 – 8 Mt Ash
R4 – Aberdare make a good start but each end is going very close, the score is in favour of Aberdare after 9 ends at 9-4. Mt Ash find that bit extra and score 11 shots in the next 6 ends to lead now at 15-10. Aberdare take the last three ends but cannot overhaul Mt Ash and lose out narrowly.
Final Score
Aberdare 14 – 15 Mt Ash
Overall score Aberdare 60 – 58 Mt Ash

A good win and the points were badly needed with 2 games left in this league Aberdare need to score well in both games to avoid relegation.
2010 Match ReportsPosted by ABC Blog Sat, July 17, 2010 23:04:23Aberdare v Ynyscynon - CVL - Venue Away 17/07/2010
21 ends 2 practice ends Aberdare jack.
This was a mid table clash and both sides were in need of a win to maintain their position in this league. Ynyscynon had already beaten Aberdare at home in this league earlier in the season so would they do the double?
The weather was sunny but a cool breeze was blowing across the green. The recent wet weather had made the pace of the green quite slow and was difficult on the longer ends to reach.
Teams were:
R1 – A Watts*, G Rowlands, D Barnsley, R Harries
R2 – V Watts, P Gittins, S Davey, T Miles*
R3 – P Thomas*, G Richards, W Thomas, T Robertson
R4 – J Davies, A Bailey*, J Butler, L Isaac

Match Report
R1 – Aberdare grab an early bonus with 3 shots on the first but then lose the next 3 ends, after 5 ends it is all flat at 4-4. Aberdare fall behind with a 5 shot losing end in the eighth end and are down 11-6. Aberdare find a bit of form and win the next 7 ends on the spin to charge off in the lead at 19-11. Ynyscynon try and come back but Aberdare are holding them off for the only win of the day.
Aberdare 23-16 Ynyscynon
R2 – Aberdare lose the first but win the second end to make it two apiece. Ynys take the lead and after 9 ends are just in front at 9-7. Aberdare take a juicy 5 shot win in the tenth end to retake the lead, only to be followed by a 5 shot loss in the next to fall behind again at 14-12. The game is swinging to and fro and with 5 ends to go Aberdare are trailing 21 -17. Aberdare fight back and level the scores at 22-22 with one end to go. All other games have finished and watch the final end play out. Aberdare take the shot early on and are holding after the 3rd man has played. Tommy Miles puts one round the back for cover. The Ynys skip bowls one up and takes a fortuitous wick to make 3 shots. It is all on Tommy’s last shot, he has to play with a bit of running and sure enough makes a brilliant effort to retake the shot just a couple of inches from the jack. The Ynys skip has been on form throughout the game, and with the final shot of the game plays an astounding bowl to draw the shot to within an inch. Aberdare lose by the narrowest of margins.
Aberdare 22-23 Ynyscynon
R3 – It seems as if Aberdare are holding their own in the first few ends as both sides settle, after 3 ends it is 2-2. Oh Lord Aberdare, the wheels have come off as Ynys take six ends straight and walk away with 18 shots in the bargain. Aberdare are way down at 20-2. It is more of the same as Ynys take a bigger lead with a 6 shot win in the 18th end to lead 34-7. A couple of consolation ends from Aberdare towards the end but a big loss nevertheless.
Aberdare 7 – 35 Ynyscynon
R4 – A solid start from Aberdare with a 6-1 lead after 4 ends. Aberdare continue to hold the lead and get 14-5 in front after 10 ends. Aberdare lose the next end by 3 shots and Ynyscynon have worked out the Aberdare Achilles heel by throwing a longer jack as they realise the Aberdare team are struggling over the longer length. Sure enough the tactic works and Aberdare lose 5 of the next 6 ends and the score is tied at 15-15 after 16 ends. Ynyscynon persist with the long jack and score another 8 shots in 2 ends to finish off the Aberdare resistance. One last effort from Aberdare recovers 4 shots in the last 3 ends but have narrowly failed.
Aberdare 19-23 Ynyscynon.
Overall Match score Aberdare 73-97 Ynyscynon Aberdare 2 pts Ynyscynon 12 pts
Ynyscynon do the double over Aberdare taking 24 points in total. Aberdare are struggling in this league and could face relegation at this rate of just 5.5 points per match.

Date 15.07.2010
This was the last game in the Rhondda League in 2010. Aberdare needed a good win. The weather though had a major part to play. The game should never have been played as conditions were deplorable and the match was abandoned after 7 ends.

R2 – P Thomas, J Butler, D Barnsley, L Isaac
R3 – A Bailey, G Rowlands, T Robertson, R Harries

MOM not declared due to appalling weather reducing game to 7 ends.
R1 – A good two shots in the first from Aberdare but Wattstown double that with a four in the next. Wattstown win the next 4 to lead 9-3.
Final Score
Aberdare 3 – 9 Wattstown
R2 – With only one winning end out of eight Aberdare are well out of it and lose by a large margin, lucky to get one.
Final Score
Aberdare 1 – 14 Wattstown
R3 – Aberdare lose the first but when they do score it is by twos and threes. They leave Wattstown in their wake and win out easily.
Final Score
Aberdare 10 – 3 Wattstown
R4 – A good start from Aberdare who win 5 out of 6 ends played and score well to win this rain soaked game
Final Score
Aberdare 7 – 1 Wattstown
Match score between both teams agreed as draw at 61-61 based on the formula derived for wet weather games which is far too complex to explain in this blog.

2010 Match ReportsPosted by ABC Blog Sat, July 10, 2010 20:47:51Aberdare V Ystradfodwg Mid Glamorgan League
Date - 10.07.10 - Venue – Away - 21 ends Aberdare jack one score on the first 2 ends.
As we dropped down into Pentre the rain set in, but as soon as the game started it brightened up and was very warm but humid. The green was again lush grass and slow playing similar to Thursdays match.
Teams:
R1 – P Thomas*, G Rowlands, G Davies, A Meredith
R2 – A Bailey*,H Davies,D Barnsley,R Harries
R3 – V Watts*, S Davey, T Miles
R4 – A Watts*, P Gittins, C Jennings, L Isaac
* Denotes Man of Match …Every MOM taken by the lead member .. what happened to the rest of the team??
R1 – The first 2 ends provided even honours to both teams, but it is Aberdare who settle the soonest as they gain the upper hand by winning double 3 shot ends to lead 9-2 after 7 ends. Ystrad take the next end but Aberdare are back in the groove and score in the next 5 ends to take a bigger lead at 18-5 after 14 ends with some good tactics from skip Alan Meredith. It is the same picture for the last 7 ends with Aberdare cruising home to an easy win
Final Score
Aberdare 25 – 8 Ystradfodwg
R2 – Again Aberdare make a good start having learnt from the previous match and are soon up 5-1after 6 ends. The match was very close and the next end was unable to be scored as both teams bowls were judged to be equal from the jack. Sure enough it stays tight and Aberdare are just in front at 8-6. A turning point in the game arrives as Aberdare lose 4 shots which gives Ystrad the lead since the first end. Aberdare lose a bit of momentum and Ystrad pull off a few more shots although every end could have gone either way it was that close. Ystrad finish the stronger and deservedly win this one.
Final Score
Aberdare 10 – 17 Ystradfodwg
R3 – There was a bit of unrest in the Aberdare camp with only 3 players with Tom Miles unhappy about playing with one man down. As it turned out Aberdare with one man short pulled off a great performance. Aberdare take the first 3 ends and follow it up with a 5 shot win a couple of ends later to lead 8-1. Aberdare also take the next 8 consecutive ends to pile on the misery for Ystrad and after 13 ends Aberdare are holding a 22-1 lead. Ystrad take a single in the next end to break the losing streak, but Aberdare are not finished and take 7 shots in the 17th end to add to the humiliation and round off the match by winning every end to the finish.
Final Score
Aberdare 37 – 4 Ystradfodwg Aberdare after ¾ shots still win at 27.75 – 4.
R4 – Aberdare lose out on the first couple of ends but win the third end by 3 shots to retake the lead. Ystrad take control from here and rack up a few score to lead 11-5 after 10 ends. It continues to be tight with neither team gaining much advantage and after 16 ends Aberdare are still down 16-9. Aberdare find something in the next 5 ends and win every one to run Ystrad very close at the end but lose out by just one shot.
Final Score
Aberdare 15 – 16 Ystradfodwg
Overall score Aberdare 77.75 – 45 Ystradfodwg
Aberdare 10 points Ystradfodwg 4 Points
An almost complete reversal from Thursdays game and well done Aberdare for a sterling performance in this Mid Glam league match as we needed the points badly.
2010 Match ReportsPosted by ABC Blog Thu, July 08, 2010 22:54:10Aberdare V Ystradfodwg Rhondda League
Date 08.07.10 - Venue - Away
A pleasant evening, and the Ystradfodwg green was lush but slow, it was running true with a narrow line.
Teams:
R1 – A Bailey*,H Davies,D Barnsley,R Harries
R2 – V Watts, T Robertson, J Butler T Miles*
R4 – J Davies*, G Rowlands, G Davies, A Meredith
R4 – A Watts, P Gittins, C Jennings, L Isaac*
* Denotes Man of Match
R1 – Aberdare are struggling to find the right weight on this lush green and only manage to score 2 shots in the first 6 ends and are down 8-2. A good 4 shot win from Aberdare lifts the spirits but Ystradfodwg are keeping the pressure on and increase their lead further with a 5 shot win in the 10th end to lead 15-6. Aberdare are trying to make a game of it but cannot score in big numbers. Ytradfodwg take the last 3 ends to take a comprehensive win
Final Score
Aberdare 11 – 20 Ystradfodwg
R2 – Aberdare make a decent start but slip up badly by losing 6 shots in the third and are 7-1 down. Aberdare keep chipping away at this deficit and after twelve ends are down by just 2 shots at 12-10. Another body blow for Aberdare as they lose 5 shots in the 15th end and a further 4 shots at the last make it a knockout.
Final Score
Aberdare 14 – 22 Ystradfodwg
R3 – A slow start from Aberdare winning only 1 shot in the first 5 ends and are 5-1 down. Ystradfodwg get some confidence from this start and pull away to a 15-2 lead after 11 ends. Aberdare seem unable to make any impact at all in this game and fall away badly to lose heavily.
Final Score
Aberdare 7 – 26 Ystradfodwg
R4 – A good start from Aberdare who hold a slim lead after 5 ends at 3-2. Some further steady bowling move Aberdare further ahead to 10-5 after 11 ends. It is fairly even to the finish but Aberdare are holding on for the win, well done the only winning rink of the evening.
Final Score
Aberdare 16 - 9 Ystradfodwg
Overall score Aberdare 48 – 77 Ystradfodwg
Aberdare 2 points Ystradfodwg 12 Points
John Davies gets his first MOM of the season, congratulations to John. The leader in the MOM table is still Lew Isaac who has lead from the start of the season and is now on a score of 11. Close behind is Rob Harries on 9. Alan Watts and Charles Jennings are on 8.
With 10 games left to play it could be a close finish for this prize.
